A Response to an Atheist's Dismissal
Let's ponder for a moment those knee jerk responses and memes and often haughty responses that merely smack of the rather meaningless phrase, "you just don't get it."
It is unsurprising that some people might dismiss observations about their disbelief with mockery, suggesting that believers "haven’t figured out the con yet." Such a response often seeks to undermine the discussion with sarcasm rather than engaging with the substance of the argument. Yet, this reaction inadvertently underscores a deeper truth: for many atheists, the mere concept of God provokes a tension they are unwilling—or unable—to confront directly.
To those who laugh at the suggestion of unspoken fears or unresolved questions, consider this: Why does the idea of God evoke such strong reactions? Why engage in discussions about something you claim not to believe in? Could it be that beneath the ridicule lies an unease with the possibility that you might be wrong? After all, to believe in nothing and yet spend time debating the existence of God suggests an obsession with the concept—a concept that, for some, may be terrifying to fully explore.
To mock belief without examining its foundation is intellectually shallow. A deeper inquiry requires asking, “What if?” What if God exists? What if there are eternal consequences tied to the decisions you make today? What if the discomfort you feel about faith stems not from its untruth, but from its challenge to your worldview? These are not questions to be dismissed lightly.
As a theist, I observe that many who claim atheism are not at peace with their position. They often avoid deeper exploration, fearing what they might discover if they let their guard down. Yet, there is so much evidence—philosophical, scientific, and experiential—that points to the plausibility, if not the probability, of God. To ignore this evidence entirely is not skepticism but avoidance.
The Potential Consequences: Ultimately, belief is a choice. You are free to dismiss the question of God and the implications of eternity. But understand this: the decision to reject belief in God carries potential consequences that extend far beyond this life. If the God hypothesis is true, the stakes are unimaginably high. Is it worth the risk to ignore the possibility without thorough exploration?
This is not about fearmongering—it’s about intellectual honesty and the courage to face life’s biggest questions head-on. If you are convinced of your position, what harm is there in seeking deeper understanding? And if you are uncertain, why not confront that uncertainty with an open mind?
At Last, Just Too Much to Ignore
There is simply too much evidence, too much complexity, and too much beauty in existence to dismiss the God question as inconsequential or laughable. Whether or not you choose to engage with these realities is entirely your decision. But remember, your choice may have eternal consequences. To dismiss it with laughter does not negate its importance—it only delays the inevitable reckoning with the truth.
The invitation remains open: push past the fear, ask the difficult questions, and see where they lead. The answers may surprise you, and they may even change everything.
